What is Cataract Surgery?

  • A cataract occurs when the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, causing blurred vision, glare, and difficulty with daily tasks. Cataract surgery is a quick, highly successful procedure that replaces the cloudy lens with a clear artificial intraocular lens (IOL).

    Treatment time: Usually 20–30 minutes

Anaesthetic: Local (eye drops and small anaesthetic injection)

Our Cataract Surgery Process.

Understanding your procedure can help ease any anxieties.
Cataract surgery is a common, highly effective, and remarkably quick procedure designed to restore your clear vision.
Here's a brief overview of what you can expect:

  • Step 1: Consultation

Your journey starts with a detailed consultation with one of our consultant ophthalmologists.

We'll discuss your symptoms and lifestyle needs, recommend the most suitable lens, and create a personalised treatment plan.

High-resolution scans will be used to take precise measurements, and you'll receive clear pricing and a confirmed surgery date.

  • Step 2: Surgery

Cataract surgery is a quick, painless day procedure lasting 15–20 minutes per eye.

It's done under local anaesthetic, so you’ll be awake but comfortable. The cloudy lens is gently removed and replaced with a clear artificial one—usually without the need for stitches.

After a short rest in our recovery area, you’ll go home the same day. We’ll explain how to use your eye drops and what to do if any problems arise.

  • Step 3: Recovery &Aftercare.

After cataract surgery, most people notice clearer, brighter vision at different times. You’ll go home with eye drops and post-op instructions, and we’ll see you for a follow-up shortly after.

Full recovery usually takes 4 weeks, so you can return to driving, reading, and daily activities.

In some cases, patients may experience 'cloudy vision' months after their procedure. This is easily treated with a quick, painless YAG capsulotomy laser treatment to restore full clarity.

Testimonials.

  • "Outstanding care from all the team involved. Mr Sultan talked through procedure and during the cataract surgery which really helped me to be relaxed. Would highly recommend."

  • Specialist Care for Glaucoma Patients.

If you are currently managing glaucoma with daily eye drops, we offer a combined procedure that can treat your cataracts and help control your eye pressure simultaneously.

During your cataract surgery, our consultants can implant a small drainage shunt - Micro-Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS). This is one of the world’s smallest medical implants (smaller than a grain of rice), designed to create a bypass through the eye's natural drainage system.

    - Reduce Eye Pressure: Helps the eye drain fluid more effectively.
    - Minimal Recovery: Added to your cataract surgery in minutes with no additional incisions.
    - Drop Independence: Many patients find they can reduce or even eliminate their daily glaucoma drops after the procedure.

  • Specialist Corneal and Cataract Service

At Kelsall Surgical Centre, we understand that some cataracts are more complex, particularly for patients with pre-existing corneal conditions. Our specialist service is led by expert consultants with advanced training in corneal health.

We provide bespoke surgical plans for patients with:

Fuchs’ Endothelial Dystrophy: Combining cataract surgery with specialised corneal management to ensure the best possible visual recovery.

Keratoconus: Tailored lens selection to manage irregular astigmatism alongside cataract removal.

Corneal Scarring: Using advanced diagnostics to plan surgery that maximises light entry and visual clarity.

By managing the "front window" of your eye (the cornea) alongside your cataract, we ensure a more stable and predictable long-term result.

NHS vs Private Cataract Surgery

Many patients ask whether to wait or go private.

NHS Cataract Surgery

  • Longer waiting times

  • Limited lens options

  • Treatment typically when vision significantly deteriorates

Private Cataract Surgery

  • Faster access to treatment

  • Wider choice of lenses

  • Greater control over timing and visual outcome

If your vision is already affecting your daily life, earlier intervention can significantly improve quality of life.

 FAQs About Cataract Surgery.

Here are some of the most common questions our patients ask about cataract surgery. If you have a question not listed here, please don't hesitate to contact our team.

  • A cataract is a common age-related condition where the natural lens inside your eye becomes cloudy, leading to blurry vision, glare, and difficulty seeing in dim light. It's like looking through a foggy window.

You'll know surgery might be beneficial when these symptoms begin to significantly interfere with your daily activities, such as reading, driving, or enjoying hobbies. We empower you to decide when your vision impacts your quality of life enough to seek intervention, rather than waiting for a specific severity threshold.

  • No, cataract surgery is performed under local anaesthetic, meaning your eye will be completely numb during the procedure. You might feel some pressure or a sensation of touch, but no pain. We also offer sedation to help you relax if you feel anxious.

  • The surgical procedure itself is remarkably quick, typically taking only 10-15 minutes per eye. You'll be with us for a few hours in total for preparation and a short recovery period before going home the same day.

  • It depends on the type of Intraocular Lens (IOL) you choose.

    • With Monofocal IOLs, you'll likely need reading glasses for near tasks.

    • With Premium IOLs (Multifocal, Toric, or EDOF), many patients significantly reduce or even eliminate their need for glasses for most activities, though some may still need them for very fine print or specific tasks. We'll discuss this in detail during your consultation.

  • Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most commonly performed procedures, with a very high success rate. Serious complications are extremely rare, and we'll discuss all potential, albeit minimal, risks during your consultation. The cataract itself cannot return because your natural lens is permanently removed. However, a "secondary cataract" (Posterior Capsule Opacification) can sometimes develop behind the new lens, which is easily and painlessly treated with a quick laser procedure in our clinic if it occurs.

  • The cost of your cataract surgery will vary depending on your individual needs and the type of advanced Intraocular Lens (IOL) you choose. We believe in transparent pricing and will provide you with a clear, all-inclusive quote after your comprehensive consultation, with no hidden fees. Many private health insurance policies cover medically necessary cataract surgery; we recommend checking directly with your insurer, and our team can assist with the necessary documentation and pre-authorisation processes.

  • Most patients notice significant vision improvement within 24-48 hours. Full recovery and stabilisation of vision usually take a few weeks. We provide detailed aftercare instructions and regular follow-up appointments to ensure a smooth recovery.

  • In most cases, no. The incision made during cataract surgery is very small (less than 3mm) and is designed to be self-sealing, so stitches are generally not required.

  • Premium IOLs are advanced artificial lenses (like Multifocal, Toric, and EDOF lenses) that offer enhanced vision correction beyond standard monofocal lenses. They can correct astigmatism and provide clear vision at multiple distances, significantly reducing your reliance on glasses.

  • You should not drive on the day of your surgery. Most patients can safely resume driving within a few days to a week after surgery, once their vision meets the legal driving standard and they feel comfortable and confident. Your surgeon will advise you during your follow-up appointments.

  • This depends on your occupation and the nature of your activities. Many patients can return to light work or sedentary activities within a few days. More strenuous activities should be avoided for a few weeks. Your surgeon will provide specific guidance based on your individual recovery.

  • A 'secondary cataract' (Posterior Capsule Opacification) can sometimes develop behind the new lens, which is easily and painlessly treated with a YAG laser procedure in our clinic if it occurs.
